About

Deitta n. (Pali) in front of one's own eyes

Myanmar Deitta is a not-for-profit civil society organisation committed to developing the resources for documentary photography, filmmaking and multimedia production in Myanmar. We work to develop training opportunities and workshop programs, host photographic exhibitions and screenings of documentary film and multimedia, and provide support for independent documentary projects.

Since political reforms began to sweep through Myanmar towards the end of 2011 the country's independent media has experienced a period of unprecedented change. The transition from draconian control to free press may still be in its infancy, but the simple fact that there now exists a recognisable independent media sector operating within the country is in itself a mark of real change.

In-depth documentary work is an essential element of an independent media, able to contextualise issues and assess their impact over extended periods of time in a way that news media cannot, as well as act as a platform for the presentation and discussion of social issues which are often overlooked by the restrictively tight remit of what we consider 'news'. Myanmar's emergence from decades of isolation has made it not only one of the most exciting places for documentary work, but also one of the most essential. However, in order to ensure that creative, independent documentary work thrives it needs creative, independent support.

Our gallery, library and workspace in downtown Yangon is available for rental. For further information on prices, or any of our work, please get in touch via the 'Contact' tab at the top of the page.
