STATEMENT RE. CONTINUED DETENTION OF MINZAYAR OO AND HKUN LAT

Myanmar Deitta is an independent, not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation which works to develop the capacity and professional standards of photographers in Myanmar. We, the staff of Myanmar Deitta, are deeply concerned about the ongoing detention of photojournalists Minzayar Oo and Hkun Lat in Bangladesh.

Minzayar Oo and Hkun Lat were covering the current refugee crisis in Cox’s Bazar for German magazine GEO when they were apprehended, and have been held without bail by Bangladeshi authorities since September 7th 2017.

Myanmar Deitta is fortunate to have worked extensively with both Minzayar Oo and Hkun Lat since founding of the organisation in 2013. They are exceptional photojournalists who continually raise the bar for journalistic professionalism and integrity in Myanmar. Their dedication to raising public awareness of some of the most important issues affecting Myanmar today is exemplary. Both have worked extensively for international organisations and publications and they have been rewarded with numerous national and international awards.

Myanmar Deitta calls for the immediate release of photojournalists Minzayar Oo and Hkun Lat and the dropping of all charges against them.
